Union Minister Ramdas Athawale Defends Waqf Amendment Bill, Calls Out Political Criticism

Union Minister Ramdas Athawale has come out in defense of the controversial Waqf Amendment Bill, stating that the legislation is designed to benefit the Muslim community, particularly the poor and underprivileged. Athawale, while addressing the ongoing political debate over the bill, emphasized that the government's intent is to ensure that the properties under the Waqf Board are used for the greater good of the common Muslims.

In his remarks, Athawale pointed out that the properties of the Waqf Board had previously been concentrated in the hands of a few individuals, which he claimed did not serve the broader Muslim community. "The entire property of the Waqf Board was in the hands of a few people, which did not benefit the common Muslims," he said, stressing that the amendment seeks to rectify this imbalance by ensuring that the benefits are directed towards those in need.

Athawale also addressed the political criticism surrounding the bill, accusing some of playing politics with the issue. "Politics is being done on this bill," he said, asserting that the government’s focus is on improving the lives of poor Muslims, rather than targeting any specific community. "We are not against any community," he added, reiterating that the bill is intended to ensure equitable distribution of Waqf properties and their benefits.

The Waqf Amendment Bill has generated significant debate, with critics raising concerns about its implications on governance and management of Waqf properties. However, Athawale’s defense highlights the government’s position that the bill is a step towards empowering marginalized sections within the Muslim community by ensuring more transparent and equitable use of resources.
