New Delhi: Defence Minister Rajnath Singh felicitated nine women officers from the Indian Army, Indian Navy, and Indian Air Force on Thursday. These officers had successfully completed a first-ever Tri-service all-women circumnavigation sailing expedition ‘Samudra Pradakshina’ onboard the Indian Army Sailing Vessel (IASV) Triveni.
The Ministry of Defence stated that the officers completed a 314-day voyage, covering a distance of approximately 25,500 nautical miles across four oceans. This was the Indian Armed Forces’ first ‘all-women tri-service’ mission to circumnavigate the globe. Singh praised the team’s courage, determination, and professionalism, describing the achievement as a remarkable example of ‘Nari Shakti’ (women’s power) and the synergy among the three armed services.
Speaking to officials in New Delhi, the Defence Minister stated that their success has shattered the stereotypical mindset regarding women’s participation in challenging military operations. He emphasized that their physical endurance, mental resilience, and leadership capabilities have proven that determination and competence are not limited by gender.
The officers shared their experiences of the sea voyage, describing it as a challenging yet fulfilling journey that tested their physical and mental resilience. They stated that the resolve to bring honor to the nation remained their greatest source of inspiration throughout the expedition.
This expedition showcased India’s maritime capabilities, indigenous technology, and engineering strength during visits to international ports. The mission met internationally recognized criteria for circumnavigation, which included crossing all meridians of longitude, crossing the Equator twice, crossing the International Date Line and rounding the Three Great Capes – Cape Leeuwin, Cape Horn and the Cape of Good Hope.
The crew gained membership to the prestigious Cape Horner Fraternity for successfully traversing the challenging Drake Passage and rounding Cape Horn.
Following its launch on September 11, 2025, Rajnath Singh virtually flagged off IASV Triveni in Mumbai on July 22, 2026, the Defence Minister participated in the ceremony via video conferencing. This mission was backed by approximately two years of intensive training, detailed planning, and a dedicated shore-based support network.
Beyond its maritime achievements, ‘Samudra Parikrama’ strengthened military diplomacy by showcasing India’s cultural heritage, maritime traditions, professionalism, and values ​​during visits to ports across the globe.
