Vayu Astra-1 Successfully Tested in Pokhran, with 100-km Strike Capability

Date:

India’s military is becoming even more powerful. Recently, the indigenously developed Indian Loitering Munition System (Vayu Astra-1 ) was successfully tested in Uttarakhand and Rajasthan. It successfully tested at high altitudes and long ranges. The trials, conducted by Pune-based defence company Nibe Limited. The weapon’s accuracy, strength, and excellent performance in modern warfare were tested in these tests, which were successful.

Officials said the demonstrations of the new weapons and equipment were conducted in Pokhran, Rajasthan, and Joshimath (Malari), Uttarakhand. Senior military officials and scientists witnessed the tests. This marks a major step towards India’s development of its own defense equipment.

The company stated that the Vayu Astra-1 successfully struck targets at a range of nearly 100 kilometres with a reported accuracy margin of less than one metre. During the anti-personnel strike demonstration, the system reportedly carried a 10-kg warhead payload and neutralised the target in a single attempt.

In the Uttarakhand trials, the loitering munition operated at altitudes exceeding 14,000 feet and remained airborne for over 90 minutes, showcasing its endurance in difficult terrain and extreme weather conditions. The platform also demonstrated abort-and-reattack capability, along with a recovery feature that allows the system to be reused after mission completion.

Defence analysts believe the successful trials underline India’s increasing focus on developing next-generation unmanned combat systems under the government’s “Make in India” and defence indigenisation initiatives. Loitering munitions, often referred to as “suicide drones,” are considered critical in modern warfare because they combine surveillance and precision strike functions in a single platform.

The success of “Vayu Astra-1” demonstrates that India is now developing its own weapons to strengthen its military. Experts believe that this indigenous technology will enable tracking of enemies in the mountains and on the borders, launch precision strikes, and significantly increase the military’s strength
