United Battle Against Drugs Essential to Protect India’s Youth, Says Amit Shah

Home Minister Amit Shah today called for a united war against drugs. He said that drug trade is a big threat to the country’s security, social system, economic interests and the future of the youth. He appealed to spiritual leaders, youth and mothers to join together and participate in this campaign.

Mr Shah said at the tenth top level meeting of the Narco-Coordination Center in New Delhi that around 26 lakh kilograms of synthetic drugs were seized between 2004 and 2014. Whereas between 2014 and 2026, this quantity has increased to more than 1 crore 18 lakh kilograms. He said that these figures reflect the government’s continuous action against drug trafficking.

The Home Minister said that the Narcotics Control Bureau has launched several online portals for timely sharing of information on drug related crimes. He asked the Chief Secretaries and Director Generals of Police of all the states to upload the information of drug related cases on these portals within the stipulated time.

He said that timely sharing of information will help the government in effectively monitoring the cases and providing necessary advice. He stressed that better coordination and use of technology is necessary to strengthen the campaign against drugs and related trafficking networks. During the meeting, the Home Minister released a vision paper on Narcotics Control 2026-2029. It has been prepared after consultation with various stakeholders. Emerging challenges are also mentioned in it.

Shri Shah also laid out a detailed plan to achieve the goal of a drug-free India. This meeting was organized by the Narcotics Control Bureau. The Home Minister also launched the Anti-Narcotics Fortnight. In this, more than 2 lakh 9500 grams of drugs will be destroyed. Their estimated value is Rs 6,000 crore.
