Date:

Late Monday night (IST), India added four more medals to its tally at the 2026 Commonwealth Games. India secured one gold and one bronze medal in the women’s shot put F57 event, while also claiming silver medals in the high jump and the men’s 79kg weightlifting competition. With a total of 10 medals (2 gold, 5 silver, and 3 bronze), India currently holds the eighth position in the medal tally.

Indian para-athlete Sharmila delivered a stellar performance in the women’s shot put F57 final, clinching the gold medal with a best throw of 9.81 meters. Across her six attempts, she recorded distances of 9.48m, 9.58m, 9.81m, 9.17m, 9.37m, and 9.60m. The 9.81m mark achieved in her third attempt was her best performance, marking a season-best for her.

Ghana’s Zinabu Issah won the silver medal with a best effort of 8.65 meters. Her six attempts measured 8.65m, 8.37m, 8.60m, 7.98m, 8.24m, and 8.09m; this performance also marked a season-best for her. Meanwhile, India’s Shilpa Kanchugarkoppalu Shayla secured the bronze medal with a best throw of 7.26 meters. She recorded distances of 6.69m, 6.95m, 7.26m, 6.91m, and 7.09m, while her sixth attempt was declared invalid. Despite this, the 7.26m throw proved to be a personal best for her.

Separately, Indian high jumper Sarvesh Anil Kushare put up an impressive performance in the final, winning the silver medal with a jump of 2.25 meters. In a closely contested event, he missed out on the gold medal by the narrowest of margins against Jamaica’s Romaine Beckford. Both top athletes cleared the same height of 2.25 meters, but the result was decided based on the number of attempts (countback), giving the Jamaican athlete the advantage. England’s Kimani Jack finished third with a jump of 2.20 meters. India’s Adarsh Ram Jyothi Shankar placed fifth with a jump of 2.15 meters.

Meanwhile, India’s Valluri Ajay Babu won the silver medal in the men’s 79kg weightlifting competition. Ajay Babu lifted a total of 330kg (149kg in the snatch—a Games record—and 181kg in the clean and jerk). Malaysia’s Mohamad Erry Hidayat topped the field with a total of 331kg (a Games record), lifting 147kg in the snatch and 184kg in the clean and jerk. England’s Chris Murray secured the bronze medal with a total lift of 325kg (148kg in the snatch and 177kg in the clean and jerk).
