New Delhi: Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta inaugurated the construction work on the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation’s (DMRC) Indralok-Indraprastha metro corridor on Thursday by commencing work on the diaphragm wall at the Sarai Rohilla metro station construction site, thereby marking the start of the project’s first phase.
Speaking at the event, Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta stated that the Delhi Metro is much more than just a public transport system; she described it as the backbone of a modern and progressive capital. She remarked that the expansion of the metro network is a significant step towards providing citizens with safe, fast, convenient, and eco-friendly transportation.
The upcoming 12.377-kilometer-long Inderlok-Indraprastha corridor will be a fully underground extension of the Delhi Metro’s Magenta Line (Line-8). This new corridor will feature 10 underground stations: Inderlok, Daya Basti, Sarai Rohilla, Ajmal Khan Park, Jhandewalan Mandir, Nabi Karim, New Delhi, Delhi Gate, Delhi Secretariat-IG Stadium, and Indraprastha.
According to the Delhi government, upon completion, the Magenta Line will span approximately 89 kilometers, making it the longest corridor in the Delhi Metro network. It will also feature the highest number of underground and interchange stations, thereby improving connectivity and reducing travel time across the city.
The new corridor will provide interchange facilities with seven major Metro lines. Commuters will be able to connect with the Red and Green Lines at Inderlok, the Magenta Line at Nabi Karim, the Yellow Line and Airport Express Line at New Delhi, the Violet Line at Delhi Gate and the Blue Line at Indraprastha.
According to an official statement, this project will improve access to several key locations, including Sarai Rohilla Railway Station, New Delhi Railway Station, the Delhi Secretariat, Jhandewalan Temple, Arun Jaitley Stadium, Indira Gandhi Indoor Stadium, Delhi Gate, Kartavya Path, India Gate, the National War Memorial, and Central Vista. This corridor is expected to benefit government employees, students, traders, tourists, and lakhs of daily commuters.
