Delhi: In a major administrative and policy change, the Delhi government has mandated two days of work from home (WFH) per week for government employees and imposed a one-year ban on foreign travel. This decision was taken to reduce fuel consumption, pollution, and cut government expenditure. This rule applies to most departments, except those providing essential services.
According to official sources, the two-day weekly WFH arrangement will be mandatory for Delhi government offices, requiring departments to restructure work schedules to ensure continuity of services. The policy is intended to reduce daily commuting demand in the capital, where high traffic density contributes significantly to pollution and congestion. Authorities stated that essential and emergency services will continue to function from offices as required, with departments allowed to make operational adjustments where necessary.
In addition to the hybrid work model, the government has implemented a complete suspension of official foreign travel for ministers and government officials for one year, except in exceptional cases approved by the competent authority. Officials said the restriction is designed to curb non-essential expenditure on international travel and redirect focus toward domestic administrative priorities. The decision also reflects an effort to streamline government spending during a period of heightened emphasis on fiscal discipline.
