New Delhi Hosts 23rd India-Myanmar Talks, Discuss Security and Border Cooperation

New Delhi: India and Myanmar reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening bilateral cooperation at the conclusion of the 23rd National Level Meeting held in New Delhi on July 7-8 .The two-day meeting was led by Union Home Secretary Govind Mohan on behalf of India and Deputy Home Minister Major General Min Thu representing the Government of Myanmar.

The meeting reaffirmed the long-standing friendship between India and Myanmar, and both sides pledged to further deepen their mutual cooperation. The Indian side emphasized that Myanmar holds a significant place in India’s Neighbourhood First, Act East, and MAHASAGAR (Mutual and Holistic Advancement for Security and Growth Across Regions) policies.

Both sides held comprehensive and constructive discussions on bilateral security cooperation and reviewed the progress made under bilateral dialogue mechanisms. They discussed cooperation in combating cross-border crimes, including terrorism, extremism, drug trafficking, arms smuggling, human trafficking, wildlife trafficking, cybercrime, and other forms of organized crime. They also agreed to share intelligence, enhance operational synergy, and undertake capacity-building initiatives to effectively address shared security challenges.

Both sides reviewed the security situation along the India-Myanmar border, reiterated their commitment to maintaining peace and stability, and agreed to prevent the misuse of their respective territories for activities that pose a threat to each other’s security. Myanmar assured that its territory would not be used against India’s security interests.

Both sides agreed on the importance of working together towards the completion of the Kaladan Multi-Modal Transit Transport Project and the India-Myanmar-Thailand Trilateral Highway. They expressed satisfaction with the outcomes of the meeting and agreed to continue close cooperation and dialogue on security matters among relevant agencies through existing bilateral mechanisms, regular exchanges, training programs, and the implementation of mutually agreed-upon decisions.
