BJP Hits Back at P Chidambaram Over 'Homegrown Terrorist' Remark, Accuses Congress of Defending Pakistan

New Delhi: The political war of words between the BJP and the Congress escalated on Thursday after senior Congress leader P. Chidambaram’s remark referring to “homegrown terrorists” sparked controversy. Responding sharply, BJP National Spokesperson Jaiveer Shergill accused the Congress of repeatedly shielding Pakistan and attempting to dilute its role in terror attacks against India.

“Congress has taken a permanent contract to safeguard, protect, give cover fire, and give a clean chit to Pakistan,” Shergill said. He alleged that the opposition party was “in overdrive to de-link Pakistan from the terrorist attacks that happened in India,” calling the statement part of a larger pattern where the Congress “suffers from blame-India syndrome.”

Shergill further asserted that under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership, India has adopted a firm and uncompromising stance on national security. “The reality of the situation is that P. Chidambaram and his colleagues cannot digest the fact that under PM Modi’s government, India today has a strong national security setup. Every culprit will be hunted down,” he said.

Accusing the Congress of weakening India’s global image, Shergill urged the party to “stop giving cover fire to Pakistan and stop becoming a hero in Pakistan’s newspapers.”

The controversy erupted after Chidambaram reportedly described certain terror incidents as the result of “homegrown” radicalisation rather than foreign interference, a comment that drew strong criticism from the BJP. The ruling party maintains that Pakistan’s role in cross-border terrorism remains evident and well-documented.

Political observers say the exchange underscores the deepening rift between the two major parties on issues of national security and foreign policy, especially ahead of upcoming state elections.
