New Delhi: The CCEA has approved an Intelligent Traffic Management System (ITMS) for the Delhi Police at a cost of ₹1,789.52 crore. This system will cover 42 major traffic corridors and be implemented in three phases over 24 months, followed by five years of operation and maintenance.
This system will adjust traffic signals based on road conditions and help ambulances and other emergency vehicles pass quickly through green corridors. Real-time monitoring will assist the Delhi Police in responding swiftly to traffic jams and accidents, while digital signs and platforms will keep commuters updated on traffic, diversions, and parking.
The objective of this technology-based system is to improve traffic flow across Delhi by utilizing real-time traffic data, adaptive traffic signals, automated enforcement, and integrated command-and-control capabilities. The project will encompass 1,092 Adaptive Traffic Control System locations and 1,029 enforcement locations.
The project will bring traffic management, enforcement and commuter information together on a single platform through Traffic Command and Control Centres, backed by dedicated data and disaster recovery systems.
ITMS will also strengthen automated enforcement against traffic violations such as speeding, jumping red lights, driving in the wrong direction, illegal parking, and failure to wear helmets or seat belts. AI-based tools will assist in identifying stolen or flagged vehicles and repeat traffic offenders.
Delhi Police will implement the project through a Master System Integrator selected through competitive bidding, while C-DAC will provide technical support as the Project Management Consultant.
