WEF Forecast: India to Lead Major Economies with 6.7% Growth in FY27

Date:

The latest Chief Economists Outlook report of the World Economic Forum (WEF) has described India as the country with the strongest growth prospects among major economies. According to the report, India’s GDP growth rate is estimated at 6.7 per cent in fiscal year 2026-27, which is the fastest among large economies.

Domestic demand became the biggest force

This report, released in September 2026, states that the main basis of the strength of the Indian economy is domestic demand. The report has assessed 10 major regions, including America, Europe, China, Japan, and India. For this, opinions were taken from 92 chief economists from the public and private sector.

According to the report, 74 per cent of chief economists are expecting strong or very strong economic growth in India. In May, this figure was only 52 per cent. At the same time, 98 per cent of experts believe that India’s growth rate in the next 12 months will be at least moderate or better.

Situation stable regarding employment and inflation

On the employment front, 70 per cent of economists do not see any major change in the unemployment rate in the next year. According to the data, the unemployment rate for the age group of 15 years and above declined from 5.1 per cent in July to 5 per cent in August. The labour force participation rate also increased from 55.4 per cent to 55.6 per cent.

Concerns about inflation have also reduced. 55 per cent of experts expect moderate inflation in the next 12 months, while 61 per cent of experts were expecting high inflation in May. CPI-based inflation stood at 4.8 per cent in August, which is within the RBI’s acceptable range of 2-6 per cent.

Expectation of stability in monetary and fiscal policy

67 per cent of experts believe that there will be no major change in monetary policy in the next year. In August, RBI maintained the policy rate at 5.25 per cent. Regarding fiscal policy, 72 per cent of respondents have expressed hope for stability.

Global institutions are also increasing estimates

The survey for the report was completed on 20 August. In the first quarter GDP data released after this, India’s growth was recorded at 7.8 per cent. After this strong performance, Moody’s has increased India’s growth forecast for the financial year 2026-27 from 6 per cent to 7 per cent. The report clearly indicates that despite global challenges, the Indian economy is growing strongly and is on track to remain the fastest-growing among the major economies of the world.
