Athawale Slams Rahul Gandhi’s Remarks on PM Modi, Defends Prime Minister’s Parliamentary Role

Union Minister Ramdas Athawale on Tuesday strongly criticised Lok Sabha Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi for his recent remarks targeting Prime Minister Narendra Modi, calling them inappropriate and unbecoming of the constitutional position he holds. Athawale asserted that such statements do not reflect the dignity expected from the Leader of Opposition and undermine parliamentary decorum.

Responding to Rahul Gandhi’s comments questioning the Prime Minister’s courage, Athawale said that it was not right to adopt such a stance. “Whatever copies they need to give, they can give. It is not right to take such a stance. Rahul Gandhi’s statement that the Prime Minister has no courage is not correct. As the Leader of Opposition, he should not make such a statement,” the Union Minister said.

Athawale emphasized that the Prime Minister has always respected Parliament and democratic traditions. He dismissed the allegations made by Rahul Gandhi, reiterating that Prime Minister Narendra Modi would participate in parliamentary proceedings in accordance with established norms. “Narendra Modi will come to the House. Narendra Modi will give his speech,” Athawale stated, seeking to reassure that there was no question of the Prime Minister avoiding parliamentary debate or scrutiny.

The Union Minister’s remarks come amid heightened political exchanges between the ruling National Democratic Alliance (NDA) and the Opposition during the ongoing parliamentary session. Tensions have been running high, with Opposition leaders pressing the government on several key issues, while the treasury benches have accused them of indulging in rhetoric rather than constructive debate.

Athawale underlined that criticism should be based on facts and policy differences rather than personal attacks. He stressed that Parliament is a forum for healthy discussion and democratic disagreement, and leaders across party lines should uphold its sanctity. According to him, statements that question the courage or intent of constitutional authorities do not contribute to meaningful discourse.

The exchange highlights the increasingly sharp political rhetoric in the House, even as both sides call for productive deliberations. With major legislative and policy matters on the agenda, observers note that maintaining parliamentary decorum will be crucial for ensuring smooth functioning of the session and fostering informed debate on issues of national importance.
